| We got up at 8:00 am,
loaded the Jeep, stopped for gas and gave the Jeep a good bath at
the local car wash. It is now 9:45 am and we are back on hwy 50 on
our way to Placerville, CA which is 150 miles. If all goes well we
should be there by 5:00 pm tonight. The sun is shining but it is a
little brisk @ 50F
On
the way out of town we caught up with a really cool old Willys
pick-up so we stopped and chatted with them for awhile.
10:15 am ... We hit mile 1,000!
I have to admit that at mile 160 of this trip neither of us thought
that we would see mile 161, let alone mile 1,000. We should have
known better than to doubt an old Willys.
The more we climb, the lower the temp
drops. We can't decide which is worse; sunburn, windburn or
frost bite...we've had all of it on this trip. Oh well, at
least it isn't snowing.
12:05
pm ... Only took us half a day to climb 20 miles up to the summit
but when we reached it the view of Lake Tahoe was well worth it.
We would like to send out a sincere
apology to each and every passenger that was stuck behind us while
we chugged up the mountain. We did our best to pull over and
let them pass us at every opportunity, but there were some fairly
long stretches along the way that were shoulder-less.
We can't decide if we should skinny dip
in the lake to warm up or if we should stop and make some snow
angels!! We may just do both so we can shake the chill.
12:20 pm ... Mile 1,070 THE 2nd OF THE "7 WONDERS" OF THIS TRIP!
We pulled into South Lake Tahoe and managed to resist the urge to
stop at one of the casino's and try again to win some gas money.
12:25 pm .... Tahoe is simply amazing!! The colors of the water are
so brilliant it would make you think that you're in some tropical
paradise.... We think we should stay awhile. There is no doubt
that this is a great way to tour through the area. We are
forced to go slow and enjoy the sights.
2:15 pm ... Mile 1,112 We just passed the turn to get to the Rubicon
Trail, had to fight the urge to pull in and see if we can't make our
way back to Tahoe via the Rubicon. Now that we have made it over the
mountains and dropped in elevation we pulled over, shed about 6
layers of clothes, gooped on the sunblock and smoked the tires
getting back on the road ... Ok maybe we didn't smoke the tires but
we did get up to 38 MPH in under 149 seconds, good thing we were
pointed downhill!!
Down is way better than up. We
have been flying down the mountain. If it weren't for the
curves and cliffs I'm sure we could get this baby up to 80 mph!
2:45 pm ... Mile 1,135
We made it to Placerville, CA and we are going to meet with Ray
Pledger, a friend and co-worker of Will's at Jeep Jamboree.
We
checked out a few of Ray's toys and Jeeps. Ray is an electronics guy
and a glance at any of his Jeeps it certainly shows, he began to
show us some of the additions to his Jeeps and we were immediately
impressed and envious of the technology he is rolling with. Ray has
a TJ as well as an old Willys that we made efforts to trade with but
he wouldn’t give in that quickly, we’ll try again tomorrow!
Ray also works with
the local search and rescue team and has all the equipment that one
could want from GPS systems to HAM radio set ups, PA systems and an
endless list of other electronic gadgets all mounted in two of the
most equipped and ready to wheel vehicles that you would want to hit
the trails in.
While
we were at Rays we took the opportunity to repair the damaged wires
we had from our electrical fire mishap. Who better to call on
for supplies than Ray! We took advantage of the timing, made our
repairs and then decided to head over to another local wheeling
buddies house to get a few pictures of his Commando.
Tom
White is another JJUSA guy that Will spends a lot of time with
working the various Jeep Jamboree events across the country. We
snapped a few shots of Tom’s commando and amazing shop before
hitting the road in an effort to find a hotel.
5:30
pm We checked in to the Best Western in Placerville, unloaded our
gear and had dinner with Ray and Karen at the Mexican restaurant
across the street. It is now 9:10 pm and we are just getting
started on our daily website updates. We are both extremely
excited for tomorrow morning...we are meeting with Pearse Umlauf,
the VP of Jeep Jamboree USA as well as checking out Mark A Smith's
(the founder of Jeep Jamboree USA) Jeep collection. You bet we
will have lots of pictures of his collection to post on tomorrows
blog.
