DAY TEN...
May 19, 2007 Enid, OK to Guymon, OK

Total Distance Today:  211 miles

Distance Remaining:  926 miles

We did some more work on the website this morning so we are off to a late start.  Last night we worked until we couldn't see or think straight and finally went to bed at 1:30 am.  We checked out of the hotel just after 11:00 am, went to Wendy's and had burgers and frosties for breakfast and we are now on the road.  We hope to get another 300 miles or so today which should take us until around 6:00 or 7:00 pm if all goes well.  We are kinda hoping for an uneventful day which makes for a boring story, but at this point we'd be ok with that for a day.

That has been one of the things that we have really noticed on this trip.  Every day has started with us wondering what we are going to write about that day because every day begins with us planning to do nothing other than drive all day and sleep all night which would be a pretty boring story.  Luckily (or unluckily depending how you look at it), every day so far something un-planned or unexpected has happened to make the day exciting.  That in itself is the thrill and excitement of this whole trip for us.  We literally have no idea what is around the next corner, or if and when we are even going to get there.  We both thought that our trip was going to end in the parking lot of the Taco Bell yesterday when we lost all of our oil.  We were starting to discuss how we were going to get the Jeep back to Arizona.  In case you were wondering...we had no friggin idea.

We stopped at Gloss Mountain State Park for a quick stretch and some pictures.

Mile 1,395 - 2:40 pm We stopped at Taco Bell (do you see a pattern for our choice of fast food?) for lunch in some small town in Oklahoma.  We are both really starting to feel the effects of this trip.  We are tired, sore and generally exhausted in every way.  We are very excited to get to a hotel tonight and go to bed early.

We stopped at a small town for gas and the owners dog had recently had puppies that lived in the store so we had to take a break and visit with the puppies for awhile.  This is a picture of the mother sitting at one of the restaurant booths.  Pictures of the puppies are in the bottom pictures.

We haven't had cell phone coverage all day so we haven't been able to post updates throughout the day.  Hopefully we will go through some country with coverage over the next few days.

Mile 1,495 - 5:19 pm We are about 20 miles away from today's destination...Guyman, OK which is 1 mile past Hooker, OK.  We wonder if they have a "Hooker Church of God".

Looks like our wish came true today...the day has been very uneventful.  The scenery has been quite bland and relatively flat.  It is very similar landscape to central Alberta, if you've ever been there.  The towns that we have gone through are very small and slow-paced country communities.  They remind me alot of the town in the movie "Footloose" with Kevin Bacon in the 80's.

The temp when we started was in the low 60's and very windy.  It has warmed up to the low 70's and is still quite windy.  We are amazed that the soft top on the Jeep has held together for this long.  The windy day and oncoming semi's don't help much either.  Every time one passes us head on the soft top flaps like a flag in a tornado.  To make it worse, we lost a screw out of the passenger side vertical support for the top so when a big truck goes past the bar lifts up out of the support and then the horizontal bar comes down really hard on the head of the passenger.  We both have bumps and bruises on our heads and we have been fighting over who gets to drive.  We were going make a quick stop in Hooker for a screw but there was no hardware store in town.

We are really sick of smelling cow shit all day from all the cattle semi's that pass us, which seems to be the majority of the trucks on the road in Oklahoma.  The chicken trucks are worse but luckily there haven't been many of them.  Just another aspect of driving topless.

We got into Guymon at around 6:00 pm, bought some fuzzy dice for the Jeep and checked into the Comfort Inn.  We didn't feel like leaving the room so we ordered pizza for dinner and got to work on the website.  It is now 10:30 pm and we should be in bed by 11:00 pm.

When we got into town we saw this snake on the side of the road so we had to stop to take some pictures.  Neither of us were willing to hold it for a pose.

Tonight Josey sent us this picture of Nick checking out our progress and pictures on our website.  Apparently this is the first time that he has ever been on a computer in his life...very cool!
