May 17, 2007 |
Hardy, AR to Harrison, AR |
Total Distance Today: 122 miles |
Distance Remaining: 1,428 miles |
9:30 am - We were up again until 2:30 am so we didn't set an alarm today. Yesterday, as we were driving, we thought that it would be cool to add a form to the daily blog section of the website that would enable us to post things to the site in real-time using my web-phone as we go. So last night we stayed up late to work on the website and added a form for posting details as we go. This is the first message that we are sending to test whether or not it is going to work. It works quite well but there are several areas along the way without cell coverage so we cannot post anything in those areas.
11:00 am went to the Antique Car Museum to check it out. We were very glad that we did. Mike welcomed us and gave us a personal tour which ended up taking almost 2 hours. We could have easily spent the day there looking at all of the antiques. Neither of us has seen such a collection of rare antiques in one place. We both felt that alot of Nicks collection should be in a place like that so that others can enjoy them. We even thought that our old Willy belonged in a place like that for others to enjoy its history. It was very ironic that alot of the old autos there were featured in movies and TV shows, just like our Willys was in the TV show "Gentle Ben".
Mile 896 @ 1:15 pm stopped at Subway for breakfastlunch.
1:40 pm got some big-ass ice cream cones and hit the road. We are going to stay on highway 412 and see where that takes us. We haven't gone far at all today and it is almost 2:00 pm so we are gonna get as far as we can in the next few hours. We hope to get at least 150 miles today. Without any problems or stops we shouldn't have a problem hitting our goal.
Vance had a turn sleeping in the Jeep for awhile.
Mile 940 - 2:50 pm stopped at Lake Norfolk Marina and took some pictures of the lake.
at 9:00 am this morning it was only 60f and by the time we got on the road it was still only 65f so we started off with our jackets and hoodies. by 3:00 it had warmed up to 75F which is perfect for our open top jeep.
Mile 966 - 3:40 pm stopped in Flippin, AR to get gas and take a picture at the Flippin Church of God sign...we couldn't resist.
We have been buying lottery tickets at each gas station we stop at and we went into the station in some small town in the Ozarks and asked if they sold powerball lottery tickets. the lady gave us a dirty look and informed us that gambling is illegal in Arkansas. by the look and attitude that she gave us you would have thought that we had asked her for directions to the nearest crack-house. she's gonna be really pissed when she sees our picture of the Flippin church....yeehaw!
We both agree that Arkansas has some of the most beautiful country we have ever seen, and we can't think of a better way to see it than cruising along at 40 mph with no doors, sides or windows blocking the view. it is very green with rolling hills and the small towns that we have gone through are very unique and probably haven't changed much in the last 30 years or so.
One of the things that we have really learned on this trip is that if you want to really enjoy traveling across the states stay off the interstates and enjoy the extra time and scenery that the smaller back roads offer. we have both traveled extensively within the USA and in all of our interstate travel combined, we have not seen as many cool things and places as we have seen on the first 1,000 miles of this trip. it has been way more enjoyable than we both expected, and we can hardly wait for the next 1,000 + miles.
Mile 1007 we arrived in Harrison, AR at 5:15 pm. we figured that we would get a hotel while we were in a bigger town. Branson Missouri is only about 20 miles away but we wanted to stay in less of a tourist town in order to keep the hotel cost down. We didn't get very far today, certainly not as far as we had hoped. We did a marathon yesterday so we didn't want to push it today. We will get some well deserved rest and get up early for a long ride tomorrow.
6:30 pm - We walked across the street and had dinner at "The Dixi Cafe" which is a neat little southern restaurant with great food.
7:45 pm after dinner we decided that it was time to do some laundry for the first time on this trip. Just like typical men, we each threw all of our clothes in the washing machine without bothering to separate the lights from the darks. We felt that we didn't have time to bother separating anything...actually we are to tired to bother with minor details like that, plus we saved about $1.50 by reducing the amount of loads required.
9:30 pm - We are once again standing in the hotel parking lot enjoying a cigar with our laptops on top of the trailer updating todays journal and pictures. Not only does the trailer perform fantastic on the road, it makes for a great desk.
Once again, we had every intention of getting to bed early tonight so we will be fresh for our marathon drive tomorrow. It is already 10:00 pm and we still have quite a bit to do in order to get todays journal and pictures posted. As usual it looks like it will be yet another late night.
