Description:
One-of-a-Kind
Fuel-Injected
Six-Passenger
Jeep
Scrambler
CJ-8 Red
Betty – a
1984 Jeep
Scrambler
Laredo,
customized
with
six-passenger
seating and
a modern
Cherokee
engine and
5-speed.
Less than
28,000 of
these
special
long-wheelbase
Jeeps were
ever built,
and if you
live in
NOVA, you
may have
seen her
around. If
you’re tired
of
cookie-cutter
SUV’s,
here’s the
Jeep you’ve
been waiting
for!
See Here.
What’s her
story? This
jeep was
literally
found
rotting away
in a barn (cliche
but TRUE,
she was
discovered
nearly
undriveable
in Lake
Hopatcong
NJ). Now
she’s
mechanically
almost new,
just breezed
through
inspection
(although
she's
actually
exempt from
emissions as
an '84, she
passed
anyway), and
did a 600
mile trip to
Kitty Hawk
last week
purring like
a cat.
Beneath the
hood is the
fuel-injected
4.0 liter
and AX-15
five-speed
taken from
my own
one-owner
1998
Cherokee.
The drive
train,
including a
complete new
clutch
assembly,
was swapped
in by the
Jeep-obsessed
guys at
Mount Zion
Offroad less
than 3K
miles ago,
including a
complete new
cat-back
exhaust.
(See the
swap
Here).
She started
life as a
black
two-seater,
later fitted
with a bad
back seat
and a broken
hard top
that didn't
fit right.
Now, she's
bright red
(actually
it's the
"Flame" red
from a 2005
Jeep
Liberty) and
fitted with
a full
length
Bestop soft
top and four
matching
(and very
hard to
find) black
and silver
laredo
seats, with
tip-up
mounts in
front (both
sides) and
two
fold-and-tumble
rear seats.
A Skyjacker
suspension
makes room
for 31x10.5
inch
Bridgestones.
She’s got
power
steering,
power
brakes, new
body mounts,
and an
all-steel
body that’s
bedliner-coated
inside and
out. Heavy
new steel
plate (no
pop rivets
and tin
sheets
here!) has
been welded
in the wheel
wells, front
floors, side
panels and
roll bar and
body
mounting
locations.
This Jeep's
body is now
stronger and
less
susceptible
to rust than
when it was
new. All the
gauges work
(when was
the last
time you saw
a CJ where
that was
true?!), 4
wheel drive
works,
intermittent
wipers,
tilt-steering
column,
tachometer,
clock (what
Jeep
considered
fancy
options in
those days),
everything
works.
Complete new
fuel system
with
electric
Cherokee
fuel pump?
Done.
Complete new
cooling
system and
oversized
radiator to
keep her
bulletproof
Cherokee
motor cool –
check. Front
end rebuild?
Power
steering box
rebuild?
Rebuilt Dana
300 transfer
case? CD
player and
CB Radio?
Done. Done.
Done. Done.
Nearly every
hose, bolt,
belt, joint
and moving
part on this
Jeep was
replaced in
the last
couple of
years (and
I’ve got the
pictures and
– OUCH! –
$20K in
receipts to
prove it).
Go
Here
for pics of
her now, and
shortly I'll
be adding
all the ones
from her
early
condition
and early
body and
mechanical
rebuild. If
you're
seriously
interested,
I can make
you copies
of receipts
for EVERY
part that
went into
this Jeep.
What do we
want for
her? We’ll
never get
back what
we’ve put in
to her, but
I guess
that’s our
loss and
your gain.
We’re asking
$12,800, but
make us an
offer or, if
you’ve got a
2002-2006
Wrangler,
we might be
interested
in a trade
or partial
trade. We're
not growing
up, but we
are growing
older, and
we decided
that A/C,
airbags and
the like are
probably a
good idea,
so we're
open to
offers.
Why’s she
called Red
Betty? The
current
paint was an
inexpensive
job while we
put the
money into
the
mechanical
work, but as
you can see
she still
looks great!
The plan was
to finish
her with a
truly
high-end
paint job,
topped off
with custom
pin-up girl
Bomber-style
“nose art”
to honor my
wife’s
father and
uncle who
served in
WWII. We
even have
the design
ready and
can email
you the
hi-res files
if you'd
like to have
the Red
Betty decals
made.
