| TEXAS SPUR JEEP JAMBOREE 2009... | |
|
The jamboree held at the “Inks Ranch” in Llano Texas this year was another great event, the attendance numbers were down but there were still more than 140 people that made it out to the event. Llano is located just north west of San Antonio and is close to the Enchanted Rock National Recreation Area. Typically the fall temps in the area are still in the 80’s and 90’s with dry conditions but this year the conditions were far from normal or typical. With almost a week’s worth of straight rain the dry, sandy creek beds that were normal parts of the trail became water crossing obstacles while other spots and areas became impassable. The wheeling in Texas is not what one would necessarily think it would be, even though most of the state is relatively flat there some extremely large areas of granite rock that jut out of the ground and dry plains that make for some very extreme wheeling. The granite face of the rock makes for great traction most of the time and provides some very exciting and challenging climbs, throw several days of rain into the mix and take wet, sand covered tires up to the face of an obstacle that has been run or climbed several times before and suddenly the dynamics of the climb change immediately and it becomes more of a safety issue than a challenge. With areas and sections of the trail named “Moab”, “Balancing Rock”, “Big Sandy”, “Watch Mountain” and “Hunter’s Hill” there are plenty of stops, climbs and scenic areas in the 2,500 acres that make up the “Inks Ranch” that keep the participants entertained. The wheeling there consists of steep climbs that leave you staring at the sky wondering where the hell the trail disappeared to and hoping that you somehow see it again before falling off the other side of the mountain to some really nice cross axle sections that can test the flex, articulation and capabilities of the best built rigs. There is definitely some good wheeling to be had if you can find a land owner that is willing to let you out on the property to take advantage of what Texas has to offer for wheeling. As always any information on this or any of Jeep Jamboree USA’s events across the country can be found on their website at http://www.jeepjamboreeusa.com/. |
